Another quarter, another roundup where I didn’t write down everything I consumed so I know I will forget at least two pieces. Here we go!
Reading
Again, I only read one book and it was only because my friend suggested we start a bookclub. I’m pumped about it because our meetings are cute! What a good motivational tool.
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt was a breezy, heartwarming narrative. It’s a book from multiple perspectives, including Marcellus — a Giant Pacific Octopus living in the Sowell Bay Aquarium. Reading now this was interesting because my friend just finished up working at the New York Aquarium after diving and interacting with aquatic life in the wild for a couple of years. I enjoyed reading this book with more context on working with animals in captivity. The main plots of the book surround people who live in Sowell Bay, though. From multiple perspectives, we read about the connections everyone in this small town has and the importance of empathy. Overall it was a little corny, but it’s just what I needed. Definitely a good summer read!
We’re on to The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. Big pivot, but I’m enjoying it so far.
Movies
Babes and Problemista were definitely my top watches this quarter. Click the links to read more about my experiences watching!
Into the Hearts of Babes
Babes is now accompanying Someone Great in my list of comforting movies about people continuing to grow and evolve in adulthood. They remind us that even though change is frightening, it is necessary and beautiful. Written by Ilana Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz,
I’m not sure how much I have to say about Challengers. I have phases with synthwave music the score GOT ME. Zendaya is a phenomenal actor and we are lucky to be living now to watch her. The men were also good! Walking away from the theatre, I’m very happy that I don’t have those people’s issues.
Walking out of Monkey Man the only thing I could think was ‘Dev Patel wrote this and Dev Patel was written by a woman.” I had seen no information about the movie prior to Sean purchasing the tickets. As Patel starred, wrote, directed and produced the film, I assume the marketing budget was just his face. This movie is for the girls and dolls, trust me.
That night we walked from the FiDi Alamo to the East Village AMC to see Dune: Part Two. The evening before Sean and I finally watched Part One for the first time without me threatening to fall asleep. As someone who took way too long to watch it, I highly recommend you carve out six hours to watch them both. Again: ZENDAYA. Sorry for the unoriginal take.
Television
Hey, did you know that…
Hacks could go on and on and on and I would never get tired of it. It is laugh out loud funny every episode. Lorelei Gilmore wishes she had this much wit.
Dear Sean. I’m sorry but I finished season 3 of The Bear without you. You work in a kitchen so I know it’s hard for you to watch and in a way I was watching ahead to see if it relaxed at all for you. It really doesn’t until the second half of the season. I will tell you that there was not nearly enough Sydney. Loved the real chef cameos and Joel McHale. I will also not be telling you in person, but will be waiting until you read this blog to find out.
Abbott Elementary is another show where the comedy never fails and the storyline gets richer. After watching The Office, I know “will they, won’t they” storylines bore me after “they do,” so I’m curious to see how they write this arc.
Live Shows
sali is performing in Brooklyn all the time so it is hard to miss a show. However I was lucky enough to see her perform with “the babies” for the BODY music video fundraiser show. Sali’s released music is more produced, so watching her have fun with these boys on stage to acoustic versions is so entertaining. Her opener, Emma Jayne, was the perfect show opener as well.
Music
Colette March is an artist to watch. Queer girlies are rising to the top of the charts and Colette is the next star ⭐
