There are very few concerts I have attended and remembered**. Like truly feeling how I felt; how the music was arranged; damn, how the set was designed! They go so quick. You walk in, you sing along and you leave.
My friends and I experienced Remi Wolf’s performance at Kings Theater in October. If I could afford the plane tickets and the time off from work, I would have seen her at Red Rocks this weekend.
Pricing
The tickets were SIXTY DOLLARS. The accessibility opens her up to so many people who may have otherwise skipped out (like, potentially, me). This is coming from someone who spent $500 on one Harry Styles ticket (and then another $500 on two the next year during his MSG residency for a friend’s birthday). Our seats were so good and $60 including processing fees. I still feel like it’s a mistake somehow.
The Venue
The Kings Theatre in good ol’ Brooklyn. This place was so gorgeous that we bought tickets for a Halloween Rocky Horror viewing a few weeks later just to be in it’s graces. It’s an outstanding reminder that culture has been emerging from Flatbush since the cavemen were drawing. It’s regal and elegant. You feel lucky to be there.
Merch
Good merch IS SO RARE NOW. I feel like marketing teams do not understand that it should be a part of their strategy. I wear this yellow Remi shirt weekly (to bed, to work, to the store) and frequently forget how scary this it looks because it’s comfort overrides insecurities.
Performance
I cannot stand when artists perform their music just as they were recorded. You are on stage with a live band in front of me so HAVE FUN WITH IT!? Remi had a great time with her band, played around with the sounds of her songs and sang “Life is a mother-f*ckin Highway.'“ I mean, the girl knows how to get the crowd going. F*ckin Cars?! She told short stories about the songs she had written; kicked her legs high as heaven during every high hat hit in “Pitiful.” She radiated joy and we all felt it.
H20 ONLY
Before my second Harry Styles show, my friend and I visited our friendly bartenders at American Bar and had one two many espresso martinis (2022 was crazy). I was so happy and drunk that I just screamed along the whole show. Sorry Olivia.
My friends <3
Don’t you love watching other people’s concert videos?
The squad I attended with introduced me to Remi and is a lot more educated on her discography. There is nothing like experiencing a shared interest that makes everyone beam for hours. Remi shares our passions for color, laughter and love. For that, she is our friend too (wow para-social relationships are dangerous!)
What are you seeing this year?
This past Friday I saw my friend Terran perform in the Brooklyn Choir Project and it was such a special experience. One of my favorite performances of the night was Dida Pelled performing her song “Sylvia” with the group. I also enjoyed the closing song, “The Big Idea.”
It’s grim. I have no tickets purchased for my 2025 concert lineup so far. Typically I avoid GA because I have arthritis. So if you aren’t entertaining me enough to distract from this hardship I will be thinking about how long it’ll take me to get home and put my feet up. The last and only fun time I have had in GA was at Willow Smith at Brooklyn Steel.
So far I cannot find it within me to purchase Beyonce and Lady Gaga over $100…okay MAYBE $170. 200? F*ck.
**For my brain housekeeping…
Concerts that are TRULY memorable
The American Idol Season 5 Tour (It was my first concert and my mom surprised me with it. I don’t actually remember it that well since it was actually 19 years ago but I remember Taylor Hicks coming out)
Willow Smith’s LifE Tour (MEET ME AT OUR SPPOOOTTTT also my recent ex came with my friends and I, then we held hands when Come Home came on 🤦 it was like she was talking to us womp womp)
Matt & Kim (saw them at the intimate Haunt (RIP) in Ithaca and they threw sex blow-up dolls at us)
Sam Smith The Thrill Of It All Tour (After singing Writing’s on the Wall they went, “That was soooo dramatic, wasn’t it!”)
Ed Sheeran + Tour (He shushed the crowd to stop us from singing This)
